Orlando Dominates RG at Games (30th March, 2006)

Canadian teenager Alexandra Orlando created Commonwealth Games history after winning gold medals in each discipline. The 19 year old leapfrogged her Canadian hero Erika-Leigh Stirton, who took home five gold medal at the 1998 Games in Kuala Lumpur. Orlando is the first woman to claim six golds in the sport - (team, all-around, rope, ball, ribbon and clubs). ‘I’m actually a bit speechless right now but I’m glad I did it for my country, the sport and myself,’ said Orlando at the end of day three of competition.

Orlando’s achievements earned her the honour of being Canada’s flag-bearer at the Closing Ceremony. ‘There are almost no words to explain it, I’m just so overwhelmed,’ said Orlando. Blessed with grace, elegance, timing and maturity, Orlando completely dominated the rhythmic events over the three days. Orlando said she would have a big celebration at the athletes village and then head into the city to see a bit of Melbourne.

Orlando will return to her home city of Toronto and back to her local gym where she will continue to train 25 hours a week to fulfil her Olympic dreams. Then it’s off to Europe in May for the beginning of the gymnastics season. On missing out on qualifying for the Athens Olympics, Orlando said, ‘Missing Athens by that little was hard. But I love the sport too much to quit after one disappointment.’
