Will Cheng Fei Flip on Vault? (17th November, 2005)

It’s the question on everyone’s lips - will Cheng Fei perform her new vault in competition? She was training hard on vault yesterday, perfecting her vaults ahead of the qualification round next week.

Fei attempted her new vault at the East Asian Games a few weeks ago, a backward 180-degree flip and forward 540-degree flip. Cheng fell and it cost her the gold medal in Macau. However after much practice, she is reportedly feeling more confident about performing the vault in Melbourne.

The vault will be awarded a 10.000 start tariff and could be named after Cheng if she successfully lands the vault during competition. Fei is the strongest competitor for China on vault, an apparatus that has emerged as the weakest for the women’s team, over the last few years and with solid vaulting she could become China’s first female World vault champion.
