Chinese Teams Top East Asian Games (31st October, 2005)

China stormed to victory at the men’s team final at the 4th East Asian Games in Macau, Southern China. They won the event 5 points ahead of silver medallist Japan. Korea took the bronze position. Although most of the Chinese athletes were young, China also sent the 2001 individual all-around world champion Feng Jing, individual all-around champion of the 10th National Games Lu Bo, ‘pommel horse king‘ Xiao Qin and ‘vault king’ Lu Bin. Feng's all-around total of 56.498 was the highest in the field, followed by teammate Lu Bo (56.224) and Japan's Kenya Kobayashi (55.600).

Chinese Olympian Fan Ye led the Chinese women to the gold medal and she topped the women’s field with 38.087. Teammates Zhang Nan (37.612) and Pang Panpan (37.249) finished with the second and third highest totals. Other members of the winning Chinese team were Cheng Fei, Li Ya and Zhang Yufei. The competition continues this week, with the all-around and event finals.

The slogan for the 4th East Asian Games is:

‘The powerful energy of East Asia will generate a new era, leading to a new beginning and progress towards prosperity with the rest of the world.’
